Remember waiting for a train with nothing to read? The minutes stretched. You watched the tracks, the pigeons, the other passengers. Your mind wandered somewhere you had not planned.

Psychologists have a name for that wandering, and they think it matters: it is when we make connections, plan, remember. We have almost eliminated it, one notification at a time.
