You board in the evening, you wake up in another country. The night train was nearly extinct ten years ago. Today, new lines open every year.

We took four in a week, from the Baltic to the Alps. The cabins were small, the breakfasts modest, the views at dawn extraordinary. Above all, the journey felt like part of the trip, not a gap in it.

Tickets still cost more than they should, and timetables are fragile. But the demand is there, and so are the passengers.
