The audience at the late concert is younger than you would expect. They came after work, paid less than the price of a cinema ticket, and will be out by ten.

Across Europe, orchestras are experimenting with the format of the concert itself: one-hour programmes, no interval, a short introduction from the conductor, a bar that stays open afterwards.

The music has not changed. The welcome has. And it turns out that is what many people were waiting for.
